The Injured Brain: Trauma and Swelling

cgi art of brain inside a human skull

Many mechanisms act in concert to isolate the brain from its environment. While the skull provides reasonable protection, the brain can still get injured through trauma and disease. So, what happens when this is the case? Why is the injured brain so hard to fix?

To answer these questions, this lecture presents simple mathematical models to explain how the brain uses basic regulatory mechanisms and the cascading events that occur when this isolation is breached.
