Professor Martin Elliott, Provost of Gresham College, said: "We are really pleased, indeed honoured, to welcome Clive Stafford Smith to Gresham.

"Clive has a global reputation as a campaigning and successful human rights lawyer, particularly dealing with death row and Guantanamo Bay cases in the US .

"He is a role model for lawyers and campaigners throughout the world; he has astonishing experience across several jurisdictions and a wealth of stories to tell.

"He is a passionate and highly informed speaker who we are confident will excite our audiences.

"Clive will begin his three year program of lectures by considering the value of a written constitution, comparing the USA (which has one) with the UK (which does not)."

Professor Stafford Smith's inaugural lecture; Human Rights Law: Bringing Power to the Powerless, will take place at 6pm on Thursday 19 September, at Barnard's Inn Hall, London.
